Tree Swing

Currently, I'm in love with all things outdoors...
patios, outdoor rooms, gardens, fresh air and summer.
So today, I'm displaying a tree swing built by my Man.

We found this poor sad little throw-away chair,
$8 at the local thrift shop.

The uphostery was clean and and in good condition so we kept it.
And I really like the retro pattern.
We painted, drilled and sawed.
Now, it's the perfect little hideaway in our secret garden.

Memorial Day

My Grandpa, Boyd B. Christensen, who served in the Korean war.

My Grandpa, George Merrill Gessel, who served in the south pacific during WWII

Memorial Day - 1994
By Susan Winters

I look forward to this yearly trip......
with dread and pride.
The now familiar long, long walk I take with slow strides.
More crowded than ever....
cars have to turn around...no more room.
The crush of the crowds seek out the Kennedy's.
Jackie lies here now...just one week.

The world mourns.....they flock to see
that spot "so peaceful that I could stay here forever".

I don't choose that crowded pathway.
I have my own private walk....
to MY spot that is so peaceful
that I could stay here forever!

All I hear are the birds and the soft breeze
that rustles through the leaves
as I walk my long walk alone.
Across from me another mother makes her own private walk
to HER special spot.
I hear her softly crying thru my own tears.
What a sad, sad place this is to be so beautiful and peaceful.
We are aware of each other..............
I can feel her pain as I'm sure she feels mine.

Across the rolling green hills I hear the faint sounds
of the lonely bugler and TAPS.
I stop walking and a tear runs down my cheek.
I trudge on and then I'm there.
I fall to my knees and cry................
soft tears this time..........................
I don't feel racked by pain.
FINALLY I feel at peace in these surroundings.
Seeing his name..................
being proud he is mine.
Sad that all I have left of him .................
a three day visit once a year.
His love embedded in my heart
His memory with me always I leave...............................
renewed in spirit for another year.

Peppertowne Book Club

Welcome to our book club ladies (and gents...if there are any)
This months pick is Couch by Benjamin Parzybok

I just ordered this from amazon.com so I haven't received my copy yet, but I can't wait. I've heard this is a wonderful book, a good summer read and since I'm anticipating summer it seemed like a good pick. If any of you out there want to join our little club, leave us a comment and let us know you're here.

Bike in Style

It was the perfect kind of evening.
After an al fresco dinner with friends, we pulled out the cruisers
and took a couple laps around the 'hood.
Of course, we bike in style.

Boots

I wore these boots in college.
They helped me snag my man, oh yeah!
I felt kinda weird when I drilled a few holes in the sole.
Like I was doing something I shouldn't.

But, now I love these boots even more.
And, the man loves them too.

Summer on the Brain!

Ladies...
When it's summertime, we don't want to cook.
We don't want to turn on the oven or the stove.
We don't want to take more than 5 minutes to prepare a meal.
Or clean it up.
We want something full of the freshness that summer brings.
And, whatever it is, it has to go well with fresh sweet juicy watermelon.

Summer Veggie Wraps

I'm on the hunt for easy fresh summer recipes.  So, if you have suggestions,
I'd love to see them.
Send me your link!

Ingredients:
Fresh tortillas
1 can of chicken -(substitute brown rice and this make a tasty vegetarian meal)
Lettuce greens
Spinach greens
Carrots
Broccoli
Tomatoes
Purple or green onion
Feta cheese
Cracked pepper
Cilantro
Your favorite dressing

 How to put it together:
Heat up your griddle and cook your tortillas-just a minute or so on each side.  While they are cooking,
chop your veggies and shred your salad greens.
Add the veggies with the chicken or brown rice to your favorite dressing and mix in a bowl.
Then prepare your tortilla by adding salad greens then a layer
of your veggie mix, a sprinkle of feta,
a couple sprigs of cilantro and a crank or two of cracked pepper.
Now, roll your tortilla and Chow Down.
Believe me, this is so tasty with a couple chunks
of fresh watermelon on the side.

Imaginary Outfit

Summer break is right around the corner and my 8 year old is counting down the days.
reminds me how precious those summer months are.
This summer, I'll be sure to let my daughter run a little wild with her best friend at her side.  They'll
solve mysteries on the go with a backpack full of bugspray, pb&j sandwiches and a magnifying glass.

'I have so got an ambition,' Trixie told him with a toss of her head. 'It's all settled. Honey and I are going to be private detectives; aren't we, Honey?'

Trixie Belden was Nancy Drew's younger and scrappier crime-fighting counterpart. Her life was filled with brothers, dogs and horses, and she and her best friend Honey Wheeler spent a lot of time running around in cut-offs, moccasins, and camp shirts tossed over swim suits as they tracked down petty thieves.

It's still a pretty great summer uniform.

Bike in Style

Yeeeeessss!  It's National Bike to Work Week!
But you can also bike to school, the store, your friends house, the park, anywhere.
Get out and ride, ladies.
And don't forget to Bike in Style.
Chicks on Bikes

P.S. Check out this great biking info from Women's Health:
The average American drives 29 miles per day. If you substituted just one day’s worth of driving with bike riding per week, in a year you'd burn enough calories to lose 19 pounds. You’d also reduce auto emissions by 1,248 pounds of CO2, and save more than $800 on gas and maintenance.

Obsessed with the Outdoors

With Spring comes a little patio love.
I live for cool morning outdoor garden breakfasts.
Shaded early afternoon lunches
and dinner on the patio at dusk.

The only problem is there are too many great ideas to choose from.

Painting the roses red

What happens when you mix ordinary silk flowers with a string of Christmas lights?
Separate the flower and take out all the plastic parts holding the bloom in place and throw away. This will leave you with about 5 flower petals, divide them and make two flowers instead of one. Thread a light bulb through the hole in each flower petal, and hot glue the petal to the light. Plug in and you have a pretty string of party lights.
